Heart of Steel

To the tune of “Heart of Oak” – not really a traditional sea shanty, but written for a play and then embraced by the Royal Navy

Cheer up my mates – ‘tis to treasure we ride
To take from all them who have too much pride
In their chests they have rubies and riches untold
All to be taken by us Knights of the Road

Heart of Steel – are our blades
Heart of Steel – are our guns
We’ll always be ready
Steady, now, steady
We’ll loot and we’ll plunder again and again

On Shooter’s Hill Road we will all lie in wait
For those who bear wealth which we’ll appropriate
We will stop and despoil them with all courtesy
As ever was witnessed in Larceny

They never see us but they wish us away
They never see us until they are waylaid
In our chests we have hearts of the hardest of steel
Someday the road might claim us but the law never will

The old tyburn tree brings no fear to our hearts
For when we reach Heaven our real looting starts
All of those who seek entrance through means of their Gold
Must first pay their tithes to us rogues of the road
